Teachers and Parents - Concepts of Death:Developmental Considerations

The Coalition to Support Grieving Students was convened by the New York Life Foundation, a pioneering advocate for the cause of childhood bereavement, and the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement, which is led by pediatrician and childhood bereavement expert David J. Schonfeld, M.D.

They have created an informative and focused set of videos to help Educators address the special needs of grieving students. In this 12 minute video, Dr. Schonfeld shares information that will help an educator understand how to support a child and their family through the greiving process by understanding the concepts of death and being able to explain them to children.

Concepts of death

The death of someone close can be an overwhelming experience for children of all ages. In order to adjust to such a loss, children are helped by first understanding what death is at a basic level.

This module will outline the four concepts that are important for children to understand about death and the implications this understanding has on their ability to cope with a loss.
